NORTH BEACH PORTRAIT SERIES

The North Beach portrait series was created over three successive summers from 2003 to 2006 in San Francisco. The photographs were shot on a 4 X 5 view camera in natural light using Polaroid Type 55 Film. This series documents the crosscurrent of artists, skateboarders, and other local residents of North Beach, while exploring the intersection of street photography and formal portraiture. They also capture a fading time and place. Now, just 15 years later, most of these characters are gone and a legendary neighborhood has been transformed by the changing economic landscape of this city.
